What size AC unit you require depends on a variety of factors, but below are some tips to help you choose the right one.
Step One: Room Size Measurement
First, work out what size room you have. Measure the width and length and see where it fits in the following table. The height of the room is not as important as cold air is heavier than warm.

Step Two: Room Use and other Variables
Once you have a general guide from above, you need to think about the many other variables that may increase the need for cooling capacity. These are some of the main ones that may require you to step up to the next kW range in your chosen model.
Will the room have many people in it often? More bodies = more heat load.
Does the room have large windows or other openings?
Is the room on the Western side of the house?
How well is the house insulated?
When a few of these variables are present, its best to upsize the unit to maintain normal expectations of comfort.
Step Three: Positioning the Unit
The position of the unit is usually dictated by the external unit positioning. Something to keep in mind is the internal unit requires piping to the external unit. The most efficient method is when the external unit is positioned against the wall that the internal unit is also positioned. This is known as a back to back installation. When a back to back installation is not possible, the unit may require additional piping and an internal pump to dispense the condensation. So think about where the pipes will go – usually its on an outside wall.
